ROME BEATICATION OF JOHN PAUL II
May 1 2011 will be chaos in Rome with thousands of Catholic pilgrims entering the city for the beatification ceremony of Pope John Paul II. As well May 1 is the labour day public holiday in Italy so it will be a busy day. Passion for Italy advises tourists who are not wishing to attend the ceremonies to delay their entrance into Rome to another day so as public transport facilities and roads will be overcrowded. Please note that all non Roman citizens are not allowed to bring cars inside the central walls and parking is not allowed inside the walls otherwise a fine will be incurred by cameras. All car parking is outside the walls and entry is by bus or train.

JAZZ IN ITALY UMBRIA JAZZ FESTIVAL 2011
Umbria Jazz 11, Perugia 8-17 July 2011.
This year’s festival, from 8 to 17 July, promises music at the highest level. On 9 July, their only Italian date, there is a supergroup comprising Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Marcus Miller, performing a tribute to their maestro Miles Davis, twenty years from his death.
And on 12 July Carlos Santana, the inventor of Latin rock, makes a very welcome return to Perugia. On 16 July there is BB King, the most celebrated, most honoured, most imitated and most loved blues artist playing today; and preceding him onstage is Trombone Shorty, one of the rising stars of New Orleans, with his band Orleans Avenue. All of these concerts will take place at the main festival venue, the Santa Giuliana Stadium.

Siena's Palio Horse Race
The famous Palio horse race dates back to 1310 and takes place twice a year: on July 2nd, (to commemorate the miracles of the Madonna of Provenzano) and on August 16th, (to honour the Assumption of the Virgin) in Piazza del Campo.The race consists of bareback riders making three circuits of the main square and it is over in 90 seconds, but it is preceded by five hours of flag-throwing acrobatics.
The excitement and passion that takes over the city during the race makes this an incredible event in Italy, one not to be missed.
VERONA OPERA FESTIVAL 2011
The 89th Opera Festival of the Fondazione Arena di Verona will take place this year from June 17th to September 3rd with 6 opera titles and 49 performances.
The titles this year include La Traviata, Aida, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Nabucco, La Boheme and Romeo et Juliette.
L’ 89° Festival Lirico della Fondazione Arena di Verona andra’ in scena quest’anno dal 17 giugno al 3 settembre con 6 opere per un totale di 49 spettacoli.

LA BOHEME AND CARNIVALE IN VENICE FEB 2011
An ancient and elegant tradition, the Carnivale of Venice is the most famous Carnival throughout Italy, dating back to the XII century: for some days (but celebrations could last also months) moral rules were forgotten and transgressions were fully allowed. The Carnival of Venice reached its climax in 1700, the last century of the Venetian Republic, thanks to renowned personalities such as Carlo Goldoni and Giacomo Casanova.
ANDREA BOCELLI IN PISA 29 DEC 2010
Partirà dal Teatro Verdi di Pisa il nuovo, affascinante progetto di Andrea Bocelli. Con "Notte Illuminata” il Maestro regala agli appassionati di musica classica, e non solo, una serie di concerti capaci di abbracciare oltre duecento anni di musica, quattro lingue, e sette compositori in un’esperienza unica che viaggerà per il mondo. E per l’importante debutto, il tenore ha pensato proprio alla sua terra.
“Notte Illuminata”, infatti, accenderà i riflettori il 29 dicembre al Teatro Verdi di Pisa per un concerto di beneficenza in favore dell’associazione “Viva Federico” e dell'associazione "ARPA" di cui Bocelli è Presidente onorario. La prevendita partirà martedì' 23 novembre. Il suggestivo lavoro vede il celebre tenore cimentarsi in una serie di perle del repertorio classico con il solo accompagnamento del pianoforte suonato dal pianista di fama internazionale Maestro Vincent Scalera.
