Most of Catania's wide streets and majestic palaces were built during the Baroque period in the eighteenth century after the city was devastated by Mt Etna's erruptions in 1669 and 1693.
The principal architects involved in the reconstruction transported the city from its medieval roots creating wide avenues, elegant buildings, squares with splendid churches and monasteries which produce a magnificent black and white effect.
