4 FACTORS WHEN BOOKING A VILLA IN ITALY

Thursday, 18 October 2012 12:42

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!

A wonderful Italian friend of mine once offered me her beautiful Tuscan villa for a holiday rent free for my family and of course I readily jumped at the chance.  The historical villa was magnificent - a three story, five bedroomed palace on acres of land with frescos on the ceiling.

However the greatest drawback we came to discover was the location.  It was  near the most boring  and ugliest village in the whole of Italy with no decent shops and to go anywhere interesting took 1.5 hrs to drive and we spent over 3 hours driving each day which proved to be exhausting.... In this series of blogs, Passion For Italy are showcasing some of our favourite villas all over Italy. What better place to start than Tuscany...

This beautiful villa sleeps 16, so is perfect for groups of friends or large extended families, or even an intimate wedding party. The villa is on an estate that spans over 1500 acres in the Montepulciano wine region of Tuscany, about half-way between Siena and Florence.

On the grounds of the estate you can enjoy horse-riding, walking, fishing or you can simply relax and pass the time by the villa's private pool. The estate is on the edge of a vast nature reserve and is perfect for nature lovers, but the rich cultural offerings of the region and its surrounds (such as the towns of Pienza and Cortona) are just a short drive away.

THE GREAT ARTISTS OF ITALY

Thursday, 05 July 2012 08:12

As I work and travel around Italy every year, I have visited many of the major museums in Italy.  On my first visit to the Galleria degli Uffizi in Firenze over 25 years ago, having never formally studied Italian art history, I was simply overwhelmed. It was all too much for me. So many paintings of such great artists - I thought how can I get to know them all. Youth is impatient - I wanted to know them immediately and as I had completed a science degree I thought - oh no I should have done an Italian Art history degree!!

Many years later while growing this business from scratch,  I learnt the saying - HOW DO YOU MOVE AN ELEPHANT BY YOURSELF? If you know the correct answer and would like us to organise a trip to Italy for you - the first person to write the correct answer can win a free half hour consultation about where to travel in Italy with me via skype video anywhere in the world.

REDENTORE FESTIVAL VENICE JULY 14 2012

Monday, 02 July 2012 08:19

If you plan to be in Venice for the Redentore which is one of Venice's best loved festivals. Decorated boats arrive at the basin of Piazza San marco at sunset and all along the canals waiting to see the huge firework display which takes place after dark. It is a wonderful site to see with boats of all sizes up and down the Grand Canal and the Venetians make it a big party and go all out to celebrate.

STEP BACK INTO THE PAST IN ITALY

Saturday, 23 June 2012 08:54

Italy is a blast from the past and this I feel, is the real reason why people love to come here. It reminds us of our innocent childhoods when life was simple and tomatoes tasted like real tomatoes.

In the historical center of each town there are no flashing neon lights full of advertising – only 400 year old buildings made of marble and sandstone with iron 18th century street lamps and a discreet bronze plaque with the name of the business.

EASTER IN PRAIANO AND POSITANO

by Edward Close

The towns of Praiano and Positano on the Amalfi coast are a must see for an Italian traveller. This area of Italy is a place of beauty and captivating landscapes that should be on every Italianophile’s itinerary. You must first endeavor through the windy roads that lead into these tiny pockets of civilization that have crept up into existence like flowers popping up out of rocky crevices. The views are breathtaking and the sea breeze invigorating as you take in the wonder of the region. As you sip the local wine and taste the exquisite gifts of the sea, the sunsets will never be forgotten.

PACKING FOR TRAVEL TO ITALY

Thursday, 24 May 2012 13:31

Catching trains in Italy I always find stressful. One can never relax. It is always busy on the Eurostar the high speed train. They are always heavily booked.  One always climbs in at the wrong door and one has to drag the heavy bags up an isle approx. 70 cm wide.  I highly recommend using a suitcase with wheels that turn sideways for train travel...READ MORE!!

SNOW IN ROME - NEVE A ROMA

Saturday, 05 May 2012 22:01

By Edward Close

During the January freeze in Arcidosso, Tuscany, my brother Oscar and I kept asking members of his beloved host family, whether it would snow the next day. We joked about the possibility of Australians doing a snowdance and they said maybe later in the winter it would come and we would sadly miss it. We both prayed for snow as it is a novelty for us Brisbanites and we wanted to see the town blanketed in white like some photos we had seen. Oscar parted for Australia soon after and the cold continued for me down in bella Roma. I therefore continued my quest for snow and questioned some Roman friends whether this was a possibility....

APRIL - ARTICHOKE SEASON IN ITALY

Saturday, 14 April 2012 06:18

I always seem to write articles about food when down here on the gulf of Napoli at Pozzuoli.  It is because the Italians are obsessed with food and what they are going to eat today and how good was it yesterday and yes maybe tomorrow even better…!!! And yes it rubs off on you!!...... read more click below

I am a foodie when other people cook for me but running Passion for Italy Travel I do not have much time left over for cooking after a hard day at the office. I appreciate the labour of love that other cooks offer me but normally at home I find it a chore to cook. Maybe that has something to do with having had to cook every day for a large family for many years!!….

FLORENCE A CITY OF CULTURE

Monday, 09 April 2012 06:49

I have spent the last four days working in Florence and making contact with the wonderful staff of the Passion for Italy Florentine hotels. I must say I think that Florence is taking over number one stance rivaling Roma as my favourite city in Italy.!!I always judge this by the number of time your breath gets taken away e.g. when you turn a corner and there in your view is the most amazing building of sublime architecture and sculpture!! This has happened to me many times this week...

SAN GIMIGNANO

San Gimignano is a small hill-top town in Central Tuscany. It is a tourist magnet, but we love it just the same! Its famous towers (once numbering 72, now only 14 remain), its cobble-stoned streets, its setting surrounded by lush productive land all add up to make this an enchanting day trip destination.....
